Vikings claim 55th McDonalds Winter Classic | Local roundup

The Pleasant Valley boys basketball team beat Vacaville 82-38 on Saturday night to claim the 55th McDonald’s Winter Classic championship.

PV, now 7-1, was led by Aiden Pearsall Morgan’s 16 points while Luke Kremer had 13 points and six rebounds. Ned Joyce scored 13 points and added four steals and three assists. Noah Thomas and Chase Mitchell chipped in 11 and nine points respectively. Joyce, Mitchell, and Noah Thomas were selected to the All-tournament team. Kremer was selected as MVP of the tourney.

PV plays next at 5:30 p.m. Thursday against University Prep in the Red Bluff Holiday Classic.

Chico 76, Marysville 71: Despite allowing a 12 point lead to slip away in the fourth quarter on Saturday, Chico was able to beat Marysville in overtime to claim the Marysville tournament championship.

Panther head coach Abe Simmons said that tournament MVP Rashad Samuels drained two free throws to tie the game with 15 seconds to go. Samuels scored seven of his team-high 21 points in overtime to lead Chico to the victory. Odin Nielsen had 17 and Jaiden Henry scored 13 in the win. Phil Bernardez who scored nine points was named to the all-tournament team.

The win gave the Panthers the tourney title and improved their overall record to 5-5. Marysville (10-1) suffered their first loss of the season.

The Panthers beat Cofax 68-48 on Friday night and Samuels led the Panthers with 11, and Henry and Alex Padilla each added 10.

Prep girls basketball

Dixon 44, Pleasant Valley 43: Maddux Wilson had 14 points to lead the Vikings in their one-point loss in the Folsom tournament championship game on Saturday. Ava Dunn chipped in nine points while Mariah Letcher scored seven. Wilson was named all-tournament.

Durham 50, Hamilton 31: Delany Neely scored 16 points for the Trojans (4-3) while Taylor Turner chipped in 11 as the tournament hosts defeated Hamilton (3-4) in the third-place game of the Hamilton tournament. Hanne Porter had 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Braves.

Paradise 50, Lower Lake 41: The Bobcats defeated Lower Lake, 50-41 on Saturday. Paradise was led by Nyah Baker’s 21 points and Baylie Hovey’s 12 points — all via the three-pointer. It was Paradise’s first win of the year and is now 1-5.

Chico 55, Del Oro 41: The Panthers moved to 7-3 with the win over Del Oro in the Harlan Carter tournament on Saturday. No other stats were available for this game.

Prep girls soccer

Pleasant Valley 1, Shasta 0: Faylinn Berkowitz headed home a corner kick from Mallorie Barteau early in the second half that helped spark the Vikings to the championship victory over the Wolves in the Winter Warm-up Classic. It was the first time in the tournament’s history that every game recorded a shutout.

Annika Gnesda kept the sheet clean for the Vikings in the final.

Earlier in the day, the Vikings beat Lassen high 9-0. Sadie Weber and Savannah Cresswell each scored two goals for the Vikings. Mackenzie Dowd had a goal and two assists while Barteau added a goal and one assist. Gnesda, Acire Thomas and Adeline Steinbach all scored for PV.

Prep Wrestling

Chico High at Curt Mettler Invitational: Chico High wrestling placed nine athletes in medal matches at the Curt Mettler Invitational at Elk Grove High School on Saturday.

Kody Rogers (126), Gavin Smith (145), Ryan Clink (160) all finished first, while David Rudkin (152) and Brian Shaw (182) each claimed second-place finishes. Geo Rico (285) was fourth while Jaydon Rodriguez (138) was sixth. Finishing 7th for the Panthers were Grant Hotchkiss (170) and Gabe Rodriguez (220).

At the Battle of the Buttes at River Valley High School in Yuba City, Jack Dalling (145) and Gusto Horne (195) took first, while Abram Hood (152) took third.
