Letter: Applauding the Mechoopda Tribe

First let me say how impressed I am with the beautiful job the dedicated men and women of the Mechoopda Tribe have done and are doing in developing and maintaining Verbena Fields. This is truly one more place the City of Chico can be proud of.

I would like to assure them that there is no need for concern about the wild bird seed someone is throwing in since all commercial bird seed is sterilized to prevent its’ germinating.  I can attest to this personally since I regularly distribute bird seed, grub worms and peanuts on a short, irrigated terrace, and I have never had any seeds sprout. As a bird lover I want to do everything I can to keep these creatures cared for in this increasingly urbanized area.  Surely birds belong in the lovely, natural setting you have created.  And doesn’t your nature scape attract mice and rats and squirrels and an occasional racoon?  The only down side to the bird seed is the litter from the seed hulls, but this can be raked under trees and shrubs as mulch.
