Harper’s three touchdown passes sparks Butte to 42-7 win

WEED — The Butte College football team jumped all over College of Siskiyous on Saturday afternoon en route to a 42-7 win.

The Roadrunners, who moved over .500 with the win, are now 5-1 and 3-1 in the Norcal Conference. Butte scored 21 first-quarter points and 35 first half points to put the game out of reach early.

Butte quarterback Brian Harper threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Jailen Hammer to finish off a seven-play 68-yard drive to open the game. It took Butte just 1 minute and 44 seconds to execute the opening drive.

On Butte’s next drive, Harper finished off a 65-yard drive in five plays with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Conner McKenzie that made it 14-0 with 10:23 left in the first quarter.

Harper opened the drive with an 18-yard run and then completed was three of four passes on the drive for 47 yards.

On the next drive for Siskiyous, Butte’s Zack McIntire intercepted a pass from Eagles’ quarterback OJ Calleja and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown to give Butte a 21-0 lead with 9:31 left in the first quarter.

The Roadrunners extended their lead at the 10:58 mark in the second quarter when Harper tossed a 3-yard touchdown pass to Adam Bunch. It was Harper’s third touchdown pass of the first half and extended Butte’s lead to 28-0.

Harper finished the day completing 17-of-29 passes for 239 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

On Butte’s next possession, Harper threw the interception to Siskiyous’ Malika Campbell who returned it to the Butte 47 yard line.

The interception setup Siskiyous’ only touchdown of the game, a 47-yard touchdown pass from Calleja to Hunter Davis with 5:22 left in the first half.

But the Roadrunners were able to score one more time prior to the half, as Johnny Williams’ eight-yard touchdown run with 2:49 left in the half culminated a five-play 77-yard drive. It was Williams’ sixth score of the season.

The Eagles tried to score right before the end of the half, but a 39-yard field goal attempt by Noah Silverthorne fell short.

Butte’s Caleb Ramseur broke off a 65-yard scoring run on first and 20 with 4:26 left in the third quarter to push the Roadrunners’ lead to 42-7. It was the first score for the Butte freshman of his collegiate career.

The touchdown run by Ramseur, who finished the day with 97 yards on seven carries closed out the scoring for the day. Williams would finish with 67 yards on eight carries and his second-quarter touchdown.

Siskiyous had an opportunity to score late in the fourth quarter. Mason Smith intercepted a Tanner Hughes pass and returned it to the Butte 23 yard line, a couple of plays later Jake Bruce fumbled the ball and Butte recovered it at its own 20.

From there the Roadrunners were able to run out the clock to end the game.

Eleven different Roadrunners caught passes in the game.

Three players had at least 50 yards receiving. McKenzie had two catches for 53 yards, Jace Villapania had two catches for 51 yards, and Hammer hauled in three passes for 50 yards.

Butte will wrap up its regular-season schedule at 1 p.m. Saturday at home against Shasta College.
