CHICO — The Chico State women’s basketball team’s scheduled game against Sonoma State on Saturday night has been canceled due to confirmed COVID-19 positive cases among the Sonoma State team’s athletes.
The Chico State women (4-4, 2-2 CCAA) will return to action at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, December 18 at home against Humboldt State.
The Chico State men’s basketball’s game against Sonoma State will be played as scheduled, tipping off at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Acker Gym in Chico.
A press release from Chico State stated that the women’s game will not be rescheduled. Per California Collegiate Athletic Association regulations the game will be considered a conference win for Chico State and a conference loss for SSU.
NCAA guidelines state that the game will be considered a no-contest and will not be factored into either team’s overall record.
The vaccination policy for CCAA student-athletes states:
“Per the CCAA Board of Presidents, all student-athletes participating in CCAA-sponsored sports are required to be fully vaccinated with a CDC-authorized COVID-19 vaccine in accordance with CDC guidelines. A student-athlete may be exempted from the vaccine requirement if they have received a campus-approved exemption for medical or religious reasons. This exemption will not excuse the student-athlete from COVID testing per guidelines established by local and county health officials as well as any additional campus requirements.”
The Chico State women are ranked fourth among 12 CCAA teams in scoring, averaging 68.3 points per game led by freshman Charity Gallegos’ 11.8 PPG average.
The Chico State men’s team is off to its best start since the 1942-43 season with a 7-0 and 3-0 in the CCAA, including back-to-back road wins over top-25 nationally ranked opponents. The Wildcats defeated Cal State San Bernardino 99-90 on Dec. 2, and won 74-64 against Cal Poly Pomona Dec. 4.
