Chico State men’s soccer team falls 1-0 in playoffs

The Chico State men’s soccer team saw its season come to an end Sunday when host Cal State San Bernardino scored with 43 seconds left for a 1-0 victory in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament.

The Wildcats, who earned the No. 6 seed in the tournament with Thursday’s victory over Humboldt State, gave the third-seeded Coyotes all they could handle before falling just short.

Chico State (6-12) had two near-misses on scoring opportunities.

The Wildcats thought they had the lead on a 41st-minute set-piece header but the player was whistled for offsides. They also nearly scored with five minutes to play when Liam Duerksen hit a cross that fell to Cayden Hotaling alone at the PK spot. Hotaling’s shot nearly went through the wickets of the goalkeeper but just kicked off his right instep and bounded just wide of the empty goal.

Cal State San Bernardino is now 10-4-3 and headed to the CCAA Tournament semifinals at Cal State Los Angeles, where they will face Cal Poly Pomona on Friday.
