Chico residents celebrate Veterans Day 2021

Veterans, families and friends celebrated Veterans Day Nov 11. 2021 at the Elk Lodge #423 honoring veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces.

The Veterans Day Committee invited several guest veterans to speak and the Butte County Sheriff’s Honor Guard to post colors for the event. The Golden Bear Division of US Naval Sea Cadets performed the Armed Forces salute with the Chico Community Concert Band.

Throughout the day, the Chico Community Concert Band played patriotic music including American Flourish, America the Beautiful, The Armed Forces Salute, and Songs from the Great War.

Steve Pereira, a member of the Veterans Day Committee, invited veterans to Project Healing Waters, a program sponsored by the Chico Area Flyfishers.

“We have mentors who teach everybody all aspects of fly fishing from the very beginning to the very end.”

Pereira said the program is open and eligible to all veterans who have a disability. They meet every first and third Wednesday of the month at the Chico Rod and Gun Club and more information can be found on their Facebook page.

“It’s a time for veterans to be able to come together not only for fly fishing but also have an opportunity to have coffee or cookies,” Pereira said. “We haven’t had a vet yet who hasn’t caught fish.”

To end the program, singer Marion Compton sang “God Bless America,” and the Butte County Sheriff’s Honor Guard retired colors. Visitors enjoyed refreshments, hot dogs, and beans to top off the end of the program.
