Chico High football hosts Shasta Friday with playoffs on its mind

After Pleasant Valley defeated Foothill in week nine to clinch the Eastern Athletic League title, a win for Chico High is still important in week 10. The Panthers (6-3, 2-2 Eastern Athletic League), who sit in third place in the Division II standings released Tuesday, will host Shasta at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Chico.

Chico High will most likely still be without its star running back Dion Coleman, who injured his knee deflecting a pass away on defense in week seven against Foothill.

With week 10 being the final week of regular season play, the seeding meeting for playoffs is Saturday.

The top two teams in D-II receive a first round bye. PV (6-3, 4-0 EAL) is currently ranked No. 2 with 24 points behind only Enterprise (8-1, 3-1 EAL), which has 25.11 points.

Chico High is third with 23 points, Foothill (6-3, 2-2 EAL) is fourth with 20 points, Shasta (3-5, 1-3 EAL) fifth with 16.25 points, Las Plumas (4-4, 3-2 Butte View League) sixth with 15.25 points, Red Bluff (3-6, 0-4 EAL) seventh with 13.11 points and Corning (1-8, 1-4 BVL) eighth with 7.56 points.

The third place team hosts the sixth place team and the fourth place team hosts the fifth place team — meaning Chico High will host a first round playoff game Nov. 12. If Chico High loses to Shasta it moves to the fourth seed and will host Las Plumas. If Foothill defeats Enterprise and the Panthers defeat Shasta, Chico High and Shasta will face off for a second straight week in Chico on Nov. 12.

An update on playoff seedings will be posted whenever it becomes available.
