The only thing that went wrong for the Paradise High School Bobcats in Friday night’s Northern Section Division III quarterfinal was Om Wraith Field losing power to the west side lights and the scoreboard.
Thanks to two early turnovers, Paradise didn’t take long to score in their 63-6 win over visiting Lassen.
An early fumble set up Paradise’s first score of the night less than two minutes in the game following a fumble recovery by Jose Vasquez at Lassen’s 22-yard line. One play later. Bobcat quarterback Braden Gonzalez scored on a 19-yard run for a 7-0 lead, which didn’t make the scoreboard because it wasn’t working.
On Lassen‘s second possession, Tommy Davis scooped up a fumble and returned it 15 yards for a score, giving the Bobcats a 14-0 lead with less than three minutes gone in the game.
When the Bobcats’ offense finally got on the field, it put together a five-play 51-yard drive that ended with Tyler Harrison’s 5-yard touchdown run, expanding the Bobcats lead 21-0 with less than six minutes left in the first quarter.
That touchdown was set up by a 38-yard run by Daquan Lamar-Simmons that put the ball at the Lassen 5.
However after Harrison scored the touchdown, the lights went out on the west side of the field, forcing referees to stop play.
When the lights came back on, Paradise forced its third turnover in four possessions by the Grizzlies, this one a Nick Magpusao interception to set the Bobcats up on the 41-yard line.
One play later, Lamar-Simmons broke off a 40-yard run to push the Bobcat lead to 28-0 with less than five minutes to go in the first quarter.
The Bobcats extended their lead to 35-0 in the second quarter on a 15-yard touchdown run by Gonzales.
On Lassen‘s next drive, the Grizzlies drove the ball inside the Bobcats’ 20-yard line before turning it over on downs
Paradise took advantage of the possession change and went 79 yards in six plays ending with a 17-yard touchdown run by Gonzales, his third one of the game.
On the next drive, Magpusao recovered a Grizzly fumble at their 37, which set up Lamar Simmons’ 15-yard touchdown run with less than three minutes to go in the first half.
That gave the Bobcats a 49-0 lead that they took into the locker room at halftime.
Magpusao would recover another fumble midway through the third quarter setting up Lonnie Pearson’s four-yard touchdown run making it 56-0.
On Lassen’s next drive, Elijah Wheeler scored on a four-yard run to make it 56-7. Wheeler’s touchdown closed out a six-play 83-yard drive.
Paradise’s Brady Bettencourt’s one-yard run closed the scoring.
Next week the Bobcats will host Orland, which beat West Valley on Friday night 36-26.
